Music Teacher's Helper - Your music studio manager

Recent Updates to Music Teacher’s Helper

Thu April 10th, 2008 by Brandon Pearce (Support)

We’re constantly adding improvements and enhancements to Music Teacher’s Helper, based on the requests of teachers like you. This month mostly consists of smaller improvements, in contrast to last month’s gigantic studio website overhaul, allowing you to add unlimited pages to your studio website. But there have been some useful improvements.

Competitions and Festivals: Repertoire Tracker Improvement

The most helpful improvement is probably the change we made to the Repertoire Tracker. We added two new options to the Repertoire Tracker which will help those of you who involve your students in competitions or festivals. You can now track the Association (organization or competition) the piece either belongs to or was/will be performed for, as well as the the Rating or Score received when the piece was performed. We hope you will find this valuable in tracking your student’s pieces.

Customer Support Team

In an earlier post, we announced that we were looking for some help with customer support, to help meet the demands of our growing customer base. We had a lot of interest in the opportunity, and would like to thank all those who applied.

We are now excited to announce the names of our new team members who will be helping you with the questions and feedback you send in about Music Teacher’s Helper. Two of them you already know from the blog: Ronnie Currey and Sarah Luebke. Also on the team are Tim Smedley, Amy McGlothlin, Paul Clancy, John Savchack, Sheryl Vande Kamp, and Tiffanie Scarborough.
These individuals have vast collective experience using Music Teacher’s Helper and are not only very skilled at using the program, but are also music teachers like yourself. They are anxious to help you make the most of your experience with Music Teacher’s Helper, so you can manage your studio as effectively as possible. Please give them all a warm welcome.

Other Recent Improvements

  • Email payment receipts can now be sent when editing an existing payment.
  • Files and links are now sorted alphabetically on the resources page. We’ve had a few requests to be able to sort them manually, so this is on the to-do list.
  • In the daily summary report, the lesson notes you typed from current and past lessons will now keep the same spacing as when you typed it. For example, if you listed items on separate lines, they will now show on separate lines rather than all on one line.
  • The Daily Summary report now has a link to Music Teacher’s Helper at the bottom.
  • Before deleting a page on your studio website, you are now asked to confirm if you’re sure you want to delete it.
  • Fixed a bug on the new student registration forms, where it wasn’t saving the last name. (This only existed for a day or two after the new website features were launched)
  • In the Payment Receipt email template, there is now an option in the variable list for “Payment Date”. This means that when emailing a payment receipt, you can now have it display the date of the payment even if it was entered on a day other than today.
  • Fixed video tutorials so they’re not garbled and created a new “Overview” tutorial that better covers the benefits and some of the newer features of Music Teacher’s Helper. (See http://www.musicteachershelper.com/blog/garbled-video-tutorials/)
  • Added two new links to our Music Teacher Resources page: www.musiclearningcommunity.com and www.noteableflashcards.com

Thank you all for your great feedback and continued support!

  1. One thing I keep forgetting to ask...when I switch a student from the active list to the former student list, is there a way to automatically take them off the weekly lesson schedule? Or do I have to go in and manually delete their lessons? Even students who are now listed as former keep showing up and requiring that I reconcile their lesson. It would be nice if moving their status to "former" student automatically reflected this change in the schedule. Just a thought.

  2. @Natalie: At this time, you'd need to delete the schedule manually. You can do it just one or two clicks, though, by clicking the next lesson they will have on the calendar, and choosing "Delete all future events". That will delete all the future lessons for that student at once.
You're right, though, that we probably should delete any scheduled lessons when a student is moved to former, to avoid confusion. The ones in the past do need to stay on the calendar, however, as well as any lessons that have been invoiced, for teachers who charge "per lesson", since the lessons would be tied to the billing records for that student, and you'll want that history in there for tax time.
    Thanks for the thought.
