I know it’s been a while since this post was written, but I have a suggestion that I didn’t see mentioned. A while ago I found an organization called Music Link, at http://www.musiclinkfoundation.org. They don’t provide funds or anything, so the teacher is still the one providing the free or reduced price lessons. Everything goes through the organization though, including approval of students based on their families’ financial status, so it doesn’t really devalue the teacher. Students have to be nominated by a teacher based on talent and interest (they can also be nominated by a parent or friend, but it usually happens through a music teacher at school), be on a free or reduced lunch program, communicate with a Music Link person to make sure they qualify, and then finally communicate with the teacher. They are also required to practice, attend lessons regularly, and show effort and improvement. Music Link can also help provide free or discounted music and instruments to students who need it. I don’t have any students through this program yet, but I think it’s a great way to get a talented student or two in your studio and be helping members of your community at the same time. I think teachers also get discounts or something when they have a student through the program.

I believe that it is possible to offer scholarships and reduced fees, however I also agree that simply giving these things away for free tends to devalue them. I believe the to receive a scholarship, a student must:
1. Spend additional time practicing
2. Show great promise and progress and,
3. Perform some type of extra work in exchange, whether it is work that directly benefits the teacher, or some other type of work that the teacher feels is valuable (perhaps it could be work done for the community, as well).

Regarding the tax deductible problem, one idea might be to see if organizations would donate scholarship funds for needy students; this would allow the teacher to receive compensation while providing funds for those who need and deserve them.

To summarize, keep the song/chord list out there for free, but offer (for those who want a bit more help) an optional recording for a small additional charge. I believe this idea would meet all of your criteria: would improve the site, would be pretty easy and inexpensive to do, and I don’t think music publishers would come after you since the recording would be, in effect, a lesson related specifically to that song. Also, you could add these recordings a little at a time… as you have time (or maybe even use some recordings from your classes).

you can give students reasonable lesson options/alternatives that will at least enable them to continue lessons without burdening their bank accounts.

I’ve offered reduced cost lessons in the past, only to find the family buying a new car, or going overseas, etc…things which I cant afford myself! Decided to leave the decision making to the families.
