Asking the MTH Support Team: Exporting to Excel

December 10th, 2008 by

As a MTH Support Team Member, I see many questions and answers that would be beneficial to all of the members of the MTH Community. This is the first of many articles which will show you the questions asked by the teachers, and the answers given by the support team members. Feel free to add a comment in the comment section following the article.

Teacher: I get an error when trying to export my files to EXCEL. What am I doing
wrong?

MTH: To export your data to excel, click the “Export to Excel” link found below most lists on Music Teacher’s Helper (for example, at the bottom of your students list). Files are saved in .csv format, which can be opened by Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet programs. If you’re having trouble exporting the csv file, try saving it instead of opening it. If you are using Internet Explorer, this is an issue we’ve found – that it won’t let you open the file without saving it first. Firefox and other browsers do not have this problem. Also see this blog post for more information.

The easiest way around the Internet Explorer bug is to use Mozilla Firefox instead, when exporting to Excel. But you can try to apply the patch the Internet Explorer as well.

Teacher: I used to be able to export the lesson history to excel and print them
with no problem. Now when I export it compresses all the columns and rows,
so basically my lesson notes are hidden. Whatever you guys changed to the
export format could you put it back, or could you explain to me how to
expand the boxes so I can actually see the information. I already played
around with auto-fit cells and rows, and that didn’t work.

MTH: The lesson history (and all lists) how export to a csv format rather than to a modifed html/excel format. This allows for more accurate sending of the data, so you can update and sort the dates, etc., and import it into other programs besides Excel. You should have full control over how the file prints once you get it into Excel. I personally use Open Office, rather than Excel, and didn’t see that the columns were compressed. But in Excel, you can extend the column width by dragging it at the top, or you can set the column to wrap the field rather than hide it (so long note rows will be multi-line). You may need to consult the help documentation in Excel for further troubleshooting, or if there’s anything special you need to do to get it to print properly.

Teacher: I can not export any of the data. A line comes up saying it does not
exist.

MTH: If you’re having trouble exporting financial or calendar data to Excel, and are using Internet Explorer, then you can find the solution in this blog post.
